The Pinata

For Connor's 8th birthday celebration he wanted a Pokemon themed party. Well, of course! He loves Pokemon! What he also wanted was a pinata. It would have been nice if there had been any Pokemon themed pinata available BUT there wasn't.

So, being the overachieving parents we are, I decided to make one. I've made paper mache before but nothing on this scale. So, I googled a flour & water mache recipe, got some advertisements from the recyclable bin, blew up my punch balloon and went to work.

Paper Mache recipe I used:
One part flour to 2 parts water - you want it to be a creamy mixture.

If you attempt this at your home, be sure to make a reinforced handle for hanging your pinata. I wasn't quite convinced the punch balloon elastic would hold this mammoth creation so, I created my own handle. Thank goodness I did, once we covered it with many layers of paper, filled it with candy & pokemon cards, it was pretty heavy. For the handle I used part of a granola bar box - also from the recyclable bin, poked a rope through in 2 spots to create a handle and then paper mached the heck out of it to make sure it stuck to the rest of the pinata.
Once it dryed - approximately 24 hours later, we made a small cut, popped the punch balloon & pulled it out. At this point, Michael stepped in to examine said pinata. Much to his dismay, I had made it to thin. ahhhhhhh! You're kidding me??? So, we stirred up another batch of mache & started layering more paper. Then, the agony!!!!!! This sucker began to wilt - my round beautiful pinata was sinking! I left the room - such is the stress of throwing a kid's bday party - I just couldn't stand to watch it die. BUT alas, Michael rescued it by blowing up another punch balloon through he small cut we made earlier. Relief! All is not lost! So, back to the layering. Now this baby is thick & virtually indestructible! Luckily we made this at the beginning of the week because now it has to dry for another 24 hours.

About a day & a half later, the super thick paper mache finally dried. We've got a nice round pinata going on here but now it must be transformed from sale paper pinata to pokeball pinata. Here is where mom shines!

I then spent the day cutting and pasting tissue paper and construction paper to the spectacular masterpiece. I used Modge Podge for this part - it only takes about 15 minutes to dry when applied thinly. Seriously, this only took about half the day. HA! Now that I've got so much invested in this baby, I want it hung in a museum, not torn apart by ravaging sugar crazed kids! Again, the angst! Oh, just kidding, I can't wait to see how long it takes them to tear through the walls of this thing.
